New Westminster District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The curriculum used in the New Westminster schools follows the provincial framework for learning as detailed in the Prescribed Learning Outcomes. These are a series of standards in each subject that students should achieve in order to be successful in their core learning. However, the district also offers many different programs in language, the arts, technology and, at the high school level, in different career-oriented areas. The opportunity to specialize in a pre-professional course of study offers many work learning experiences to interested students.
We currently cover the following New Westminster-area school district: New Westminster School District No. 40.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New Westminster District Curriculum
All British Columbia schools follow a province-wide curriculum developed by the BC Ministry of Education called the PLO, or Prescribed Learning Outcomes, which set an expected level of skills and knowledge for students in grades K-12. The PLO curriculum also covers specialized educational programs such as Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. The Ministry of Education also allows for flexible delivery of the PLO by school administration, in order to tailor the curriculum to each school as needed. Administrators may also offer subjects not covered by PLO, in which case the Ministry provides general guidelines and overarching objectives.
The electives and extracurriculars offered are meant to enhance each students learning experience and give them a chance to pursue subjects of their interest. A goal is that these should connect to their core learning experience and give them a chance to understand the value of the lessons learned in English or Math classes. Relevancy is emphasized at all levels, and in high school, students should maximize this so they are having an experience that prepares them for their college or career goals.

Chalk Talk: Taking Care of Yourself
There are many factors that can help you become a better student, in addition to tutoring. Three important ones can lift your mood or help you focus on your academic studies. One is getting enough sleep. The importance of not just a full night’s sleep, but at regular consistent hours, is vital to your daily energy level. Another is proper diet. Make sure the foods you eat are balanced, in addition to not eating too much sugar or processed foods, which can make you sluggish. Finally, regular exercise, even a brisk walk or jog, can help you study. This is why schools provide physical education, but much like diet and sleep, exercise should be maintained throughout the day - even after school. Understanding and paying attention to your overall well-being is a lifelong pursuit!
