Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newmarket District Curriculum
The subject areas are organized so that students build knowledge with each new school year. The curriculum relies on students use of prior knowledge to build a deeper level of understanding. It is by doing this that higher-order thinking skills such as reflection, problem-solving, and reasoning are developed. Critical thinking goals are developed through all subjects by giving students a different frame of reference by which they can develop verbal, mathematic and scientific reasoning abilities.
For instance, with the math curriculum one priority to help students understand mathematical concepts as integrated and relatable to other disciplines and real-life situations. Additionally, students should be able to analyze real-world problems and construct mathematical models to help solve them. This over-arching goal is achieved by ensuring that students know how to solve problems in algebra, geometry, and data analysis and have the necessary prior knowledge to be able to construct problem-solving models and reason effectively with them.

Chalk Talk: How are Assessments Used by Teachers?
Throughout a school year, a teacher will give many different formal and informal assessments, or tests, which are designed for different purposes. Tests that are given at the beginning of the school year provide information about what students know and do not know and a teacher can use that information to plan their teaching goals. Project-based assessments are used all year and support learning through inquiry and the development of project planning and independent work skills. Summative assessments, or end-of-year exams, provide information as to how students did at achieving the learning expectations established in the curriculum.
