Newport schools follow the curriculum set out by the Kentucky Department of Education. The curriculum provides a comprehensive overview for the learning expected of students in their core subjects. Each subject has a framework that focuses on major strands of learning, and knowledge is built for students over their school years. Faculty and staff members also work hard to provide learning environments that are safe, secure, and welcoming to all children. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newport District Curriculum
In English and Language Arts, students read a variety of works in fiction and non-fiction. Your child is expected to develop reading skills as the year’s progress that helps them develop a range of analytic and critical thinking skills. For instance, in grade one a vocabulary is developed and that is built upon as the year’s progress. Technology is used to support reading development and students can access books online regularly.
In Science, children are taught to have inquiring minds. Students find out about the world of Science through inquiry methods. They conduct research, make observations, form hypotheses and report on findings. A core set of standards is there to be met year by year in science as in the other subjects. The standards form the basis for statewide assessments in the core subjects; they are aligned to ensure that students are gaining the appropriate base of knowledge to be prepared for the next stage in their education.
