Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Niagara Falls District Curriculum

The public schools in Niagara Falls adhere to the Common Core Curriculum, a nationwide set of learning standards. English/Language Arts begins with an emphasis on reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students learn to demonstrate their reading comprehension through the asking and answering of questions and produce writing compositions. Students move to more demanding literature both fiction and nonfiction and should be able to analyze the content, and relate it to other events.

In Math, the focus is on helping students to develop and become confident in using mathematical problem solving skills in order to apply them to real world situations. Elementary students learn basic arithmetic, basic algebra and geometry, the studies of which continue through high school. Students learn how to feel comfortable with mathematical modeling and are able to apply mathematical concepts including algebraic concepts and geometric measurements to real world problems.

Keeping Informed: Recent Niagara Falls Educational News

  • Legacy of Dr. King - The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration Committee will hold a celebration event at the Niagara Falls High School. The event is open to everyone in the community. The event is being called 'Building Friendships for Today and Tomorrow'. The annual celebration is sponsored by the School District, the Niagara Falls Housing Authority, the Niagara Falls Police Department, Leadership Niagara, DiCamillo's Bakery, OSC-TV 21, and Family and Children's Services of Niagara. The keynote speaker is Craig Pridgen of True Bethel Baptist Church. The Niagara Falls Housing Authority Youth Choir under the direction of Diana M. Reeves will be performing.
  • FAFSA Resources - Students who are college bound need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This document is essential in acquiring needed college funding. The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) is sponsoring events throughout the state to help parents and students prepare the FAFSA application. The campaign is entitled "Start Here to Get There." At the events there will be college volunteers and members of HESC to assist in completing the application for financial aid.
  • Athletic Hall of Fame - Those who want to nominate an outstanding student athlete, coach or athletic team are encouraged to submit a nomination for for entrance into the Niagara Falls City School District Athletic Hall of Fame. The Athletic Hall of Fame honors those who have had an exceptional athletic record while at a Niagara Falls City School. The honor is also open to support staff and administrators who have made substantial contributions to the School's sports program. The nomination forms are available at the Niagara Falls High School Athletic Office.
