Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nibley District Curriculum

The Utah Core Standards provide all students with a comprehensive and challenging curriculum that will guide their education progressively and with an eye towards college and career readiness. Each learning objective represents a skill or area of knowledge which students are expected to master. Across grades, achievement is measured by state standardized tests, teacher-created classroom assessments, writing portfolios, and end of unit tests.

Across the district, Math instruction employs relevant, hands-on learning opportunities. Several schools use Everyday Math as their curriculum of choice. Everyday Math focuses on engaging activities that would be found in our “everyday” world. The spiraling curriculum ensures students have ample time to master skills while constantly reviewing previously taught skills through out the year. Chalk Talk: What Is Writing Workshop

Writing can be a struggle because students write about topics that are of no interest to them. Reading and writing workshops are customizable learning environments in which students can choose what they would like to read and write about. Another opportunity for student choice comes in the manner in which they are assessed. Instead of automatically giving a test to assess knowledge and understanding, teachers can allow students to decide if they would like to present their learning through a PowerPoint presentation, a journal entry, a newscast, a self-made video, a digital story, etc. Teachers’ willingness to give up a bit of control can lead to more engaged students who have a deeper connection to the material that they are learning about.
