Nogales District and Curriculum

Nogales schools design their curriculum to be in alignment with the Arizona state standards. Arizona has developed a rigorous College and Career Ready curriculum program to prepare its students for the rigorous college and career choices they will need to make upon high school graduation. The curriculum design emphasizes building knowledge by accessing past learning which helps to build critical thinking skills like reflection and analysis. The schools also provide students with opportunities for community service and to explore the arts, technology, and other subjects of high interest to young people.

We currently cover the following Nogales-area school district: Nogales Unified School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nogales District Curriculum

In the English/Language Arts program, students begin with the basics of letter sounds and recognition. Students learn writing, reading and listening skills that will ensure their academic success in all core subjects. They read both fiction and non-fiction, how to discuss different types of texts, and are taught how to address different audiences in writing. They learn critical thinking and problem solving skills and become prepared for professional writing expectations.

In Mathematics, students traverse from learning number recognition and basic counting, algebra and geometry skills, learning shapes and organizing into like groups. As students continue through the grades, new math skills are built upon those previously learned. This building blocks learning system reinforces skills already learned while adding new skills. The purpose of the rigorous curriculum is Arizona’s effort to send well prepared students into the real world of college and career choices.

  • Primeria Alta History Museum - The museum is located in the building that used to be the jail and city hall. The museum holds many historical artifacts of the region. At certain times of the year visitors can take tours through some historical houses. Go visit this historical museum and learn about the history of Nogales, enjoying all of the artifacts on display. You won't regret the journey.
  • Historic Santa Cruz County Courthouse - This historic courthouse sits in Nogales, which borders Nogales, Mexico. Sitting atop the courthouse is a statue of Lady Justice, but this statue is missing one obvious thing. She is not wearing a blindfold. Visit the historic courthouse and and other historic sites in the city of Nogales.
  • Mystery Castle - The mystery castle was built by a man who ran away from his family to die of tuberculosis, but he did not die of tuberculosis, and had 15 years to build his castle. The castle was built for his daughter and it was called a mystery castle because it had a trapdoor that his wife and daughter promised not to open for two year after his death. When it was opened, you will never believe what they found! Sorry, I don't know, either. You have to visit the castle to find out its secrets! You had better go soon before your curiosity gets out of hand.

Chalk Talk: Should I Allow my Child to Skip a Grade?

Sometimes parents find themselves faced with a complicated decision about their children's education. When a child is performing several grades above his level schools suggest skipping grades. The idea is to place the child in a grade where peers are at her/his performance level. This can be a very difficult decision for parents and can make a big impact on the child. Talk to your child about the issue since s/he is the one who will be living by the decision. Also, just because a child is at a higher academic level that does not mean s/he is at a higher emotional level. Putting a child in a higher grade could be damaging to a child if peers are much more mature in the higher grade. You might want to investigate other options, such as a gifted program that will allow her/him to stay with their peers. Just be sure to investigate all possibilities before you make a decision.
