Chalk Talk: What Is Schema?

When children learn to read, it is always beneficial for them to make connections while they are reading. This aids in comprehension. When a student reads a passage of text, it is very important that they understand what it means by relying on past knowledge. This past knowledge, or foundation of knowledge, is schema. When students can apply schema to something being read, they are able to understand it much more effectively. This is why it is so important to expose students to vocabulary and to enrich their knowledge in all subject areas.
