Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Norfolk District Curriculum
Mathematics, within the K-12 curriculum, includes mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, and synthesizing of math concepts. Areas include geometry, numbers and number sense, algebra on a variety of levels, probability and statistics, and the higher math courses such as calculus and trigonometry. Students learn how to work with quantitative data and extrapolate practical uses from their mathematic problem-solving skills.
In Reading, there is also a comprehensive curriculum, and students are taught how to comprehend text as they are exposed to a variety of literature and genres. Fluency, the learning of new vocabulary, reading pace, and the ability to relate the text to past experiences and generate a discussion about the content are encouraged in order to become a successful and critical reader.

Keeping Informed: Recent Norfolk Educational News
- Norfolk High Success! - Norfolk Senior High has been designated as a Speak Up 200 School! This honor was given by Project Tomorrow, which is a nationally known educational organization. Student participation, use of the data in decision making, and giving surveys to all stakeholders is how schools incorporate Speak Up into their system. Giving surveys for all to have the opportunity to speak their opinions on many aspects of the school system, and using the information collected to make changes is what makes a successful school system!
- Science Day - Woodland Park Elementary School had a wonderful educational experience with their “Science Day.” Learning and discovering scientific curiosities during this event proved to be fun for all! Edgerton Center visited the school for the day and brought along many science activities and demonstrations, such as Arctic Blast, Amazing Bubbles, and Sparks. The students had a great time making science a huge part of their day!
- Wind Energy - There is now a wind turbine behind Norfolk High School! There is enough power generated to give one channel of energy, but will help provide power to the school district. The teaching of wind energy will be now introduced to this rural school system, and the students and community will learn of the benefits of this type of power!

My daughter was able to improve her test scores after a few months of tutoring with SchoolTutoring. However, while raising test scores is great, the real payoff is in the self-confidence that she gained.
I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!

Chalk Talk: What Is Schema?
When children learn to read, it is always beneficial for them to make connections while they are reading. This aids in comprehension. When a student reads a passage of text, it is very important that they understand what it means by relying on past knowledge. This past knowledge, or foundation of knowledge, is schema. When students can apply schema to something being read, they are able to understand it much more effectively. This is why it is so important to expose students to vocabulary and to enrich their knowledge in all subject areas.
