North Bay District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The curriculum that is followed in North Bay’s schools is the Ontario Curriculum. This is a comprehensive framework for teaching and learning that covers the elements of knowledge that a student will need to learn within the subject. Additionally, the conceptual foundation and higher level thinking skills that grow out of knowing the subject are also described in the curriculum. Students are also asked to apply and demonstrate their knowledge in real-world situations. When they graduate, students will have the skills and knowledge needed in today’s job market.
We currently cover the following North Bay-area school districts: Near North District School Board and Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Bay District Curriculum
The math curriculum describes the skills within numeracy and operational sense, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and also points to the reasoning and problem-solving skills that a student will develop. The goals for student understanding include being able to work through problem-solving processes that include reasoning, reflecting, selecting computational tools, representing and communicating mathematical thought, and connecting these skills to real world applications.
Similarly in science, the curriculum describes the knowledge essential to the different fields like life or physical science and conceptual understandings like systems, continuity and change that a student will be introduced to. There is an Environmental Science component that allows students to do in-depth study of plants and life in their natural habitat. Students are shown different ways to investigate the world around them and learn how to take a process-oriented approach to discovery through the study of this subject.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a College
Choosing a college is one of the biggest decisions a teenager will make, and there are a number of factors they will need to consider. You not only want to find out about the academic program(s) you are interested in but also the student activities, living arrangements, places to eat, financial information and aid, the area surrounding the campus. You need to consider whether a large or small school is the right fit, and whether a city or more rural area is attractive. The opportunities to work or participate within the community during college should also factor into the decision. Lastly, consider visiting each campus again. Upon second look, you might find the perfect place to pursue your college education.
