Chalk Talk: “Reading Buddies”

Many schools have programs that pair older and younger students together for reading time. These moments do more than just give older students a chance to share stories with little buddies, however. Teaching those that can read the importance of sharing literacy is a life-long gift. Promoting literacy isn’t just about enabling readers or providing literature, but it’s about sharing and making connections. Not only do reading programs like this teach older students the importance of sharing this gift, but younger students reap the benefits of learning about literature. Language acquisition and skills come from exposure to words. Story-time is also a sacred tradition in many cultures, and it sharpens listening skills and an appreciation of literature. The programs can even go a step further by improving writing proficiency by turning the reading buddies into pen-pals. Art projects, exercises in comparing and contrasting, as well as physical coordination can all stem from these one-on-one interactions with literature. And better yet, a love of reading may grow out of the relationship.
