Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Branch District Curriculum

Elementary learners in North Branch learn about citizenship and democracy as part of the social studies curriculum. Learners explore ways they can contact people in positions of power, either through phone calls, letters, emails, or petitions. An analysis of the structure of government is also undertaken. Students develop an appreciation for the separate roles that the legislative, judicial, and executive branches have in carrying out the functions of government.

The arts curriculum in North Branch includes studies that help learners become adept at performing dance and music. Dancers work on solo and ensemble pieces that highlight their ability to combine their artistic, performance, and technical skills to produce a solid dance routine. In those routines, students are required to demonstrate musicality, expressivity, and dynamic range. In music, students become adept at performing a song or a collection of songs in front of an audience. In their productions, students explore various genres of music in order to demonstrate their ability to master different styles of music.

Chalk Talk: Why Extra-Curricular Activities Are Important

Students that participate in extra-curricular activities reap a variety of benefits. Extra-curricular activities promote all-around development. The variety of skills students gain from academic clubs, sports teams, or playing an instrument play a vital role in holistic growth. Studies also show that participation in activities outside of the classroom fosters improved self-esteem. Additionally, the more activities in which students participate, the better time management skills they have. On an organizational level, they will learn about their skills within a group that is working toward a common goal. Likewise, students that take part in extra-curricular activities have a better understanding of how to prioritize tasks than their peers. The social benefits of activities are many as well. Students learn how to communicate with others, forge friendships with new people, and develop a strong sense of belonging.
