Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Brunswick District Curriculum
Like all other districts in New Jersey, the North Brunswick Township Public schools adhere to the guidelines set forth by two standards-based initiatives. The Common Core Standards Initiative provides guidance for student learning in language arts and mathematics. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards outline the learning targets for the following areas: science, social studies, world languages, technology, health and physical education, 21st Century life and careers, and visual and performing arts.
The Science curriculum provides students a framework for gaining knowledge and skills related to the study earth science, physical science, life science and scientific processes. In elementary school, students acquire the basic scientific skills required for scientific study, including observational, data collection and analytic skills. In middle school, students build on this base of learning by using scientific principles to synthesize information and pose theories based on their findings.

Chalk Talk: Why Science Education Is So Important
Science has always been an important component of a well-rounded education. But as our world becomes increasingly technological in nature, the skills emphasized in the pursuit of science are more and more in demand. Specifically, science teaches students to think critically and solve problems. Rather than rote memorization of facts, science focuses on these skills that are important for functioning in all areas of life. The critical thinking skills students acquire while making scientific predictions allow them to think independently, while basing their assumptions on facts. The problem-solving skills students gain while conducting lab experiments give them the confidence to tackle problems in the real world. Science, then, is not just about acquiring knowledge of biology or chemistry; the skills students gain in these classes prepare them for success in later life as well.
