Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Dumfries District Curriculum

Math is organized so that students can gain operational and mathematical reasoning skills. Each topic in math, such as algebraic relations and geometry, are introduced slowly and student understanding is built through increasingly complex topics. In Science, students develop their content knowledge in conjunction with the processes of scientific inquiry. In English, the basis for literacy and communication is established so that students have the means to do analytic work. The English curriculum is designed to support learning in all subject areas.

The goal is that students are expected to fully comprehend each topic, and be able to apply that knowledge through many different tasks and assignments. The curriculum provides the framework by which teachers are able to plan instruction that is founded upon clear standards which brings about these outcomes. There are also programs that prepare students for college and career such as Co-Operative Learning and Dual Enrollment Programs.

Students have a broad curriculum that guides the learning opportunities available to them from elementary through secondary school. The Ontario Curriculum is standards-based and contains a series of learning standards that define the scope and sequence of student learning. There are also many programs like the Outdoor Education, Cooperative Education or French Immersion Programs that have been developed as innovations to the course offerings. The curriculum is based in developing mastery of core academic subjects and students competencies which prepare them for success in such programs.

We currently cover the following North Dumfries-area school districts: Waterloo Catholic District School Board and Waterloo Region District School Board.

Chalk Talk: Types of Enrichment Programs Available to Students of All Ages

Over the years, a great many enrichment programs have been developed for students. There is a wider range for secondary school students, however during the elementary years students may find a program that emphasizes the Arts, or French Language Immersion that is well-suited for young learners. In secondary school, the opportunities are abundant. There are programs for students interested in medical careers, programs for visual and performing artists, and a program focused on Geography, Politics and Technology. The district provides a full list of their offerings and the schools at which they are located. These are generally programs which students will have to apply for and are available at various schools in the district.
