North Dundas District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The instructional process in the local districts is overseen by the Ontario Curriculum, which is the broad framework for teaching, learning, and assessing subject proficiency. Each subject has a framework that details the progress of learning that students will make, establishes benchmarks for learning, and details what concepts and principles students are expected to learn about. The assessments given in core academics are aligned to the expectations detailed in each framework. The assessments can show students strengths and weaknesses and determine instructional needs.

We currently cover the following North Dundas-area school districts: Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario and Upper Canada District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Dundas District Curriculum

The elementary program introduces students to the fundamental skills and concepts they will be learning about during their school years. The math program focuses on numeracy, geometry, algebra, and data analysis. In high school, students have the choice between an applied program and an academic program which each offer a different focus on the same expectations for learning. The academic program takes a theoretical approach to each topic to prepare students for college math.

Students are able to also take elective courses and join specialized programs that bring together more than one subject. For many of these, the curriculum was designed in collaboration between educators and industry professionals to ensure that students are developing the knowledge base that is needed in the workforce. The opportunities within specialized programs often give students their first chance at connecting their learning to real-world pursuits and envisioning their future career path.

Chalk Talk: What Is Cooperative Education?

Cooperative Education is a program that has been developed to combine work experience with classroom learning. There are a few different subsets within the Cooperative Education Program such as the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and the High Skills Majors. Both of these offer students significant work experience while also providing the classroom time that will prepare them to pursue advanced academics in their field. As students begin taking courses within the Cooperative Education program, they will start with more classroom time than work experience and as they progress that balance will shift so that they are outside of the classroom more regularly.
