Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Hempstead District Curriculum
In English/Language Arts students at all grade levels will read a large variety of challenging non-fiction texts and authentic reading materials such as newspapers and magazines to teach them about the real world. Other English/Language Arts skills include listening and learning. These lessons consist of reading aloud individually and in small and whole groups, class discussions, vocabulary development and additional activities that enrich the learning experience. Students also learn spelling and how to write and support their writing from what they read.
The revised math standards focus on both skills and concepts and provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals in the elementary grades. Building a strong understanding of mathematical concepts in the early grades enables students to understand and participate in hand on activities in geometry, algebra, probability and statistics.

Chalk Talk: Understanding School Assessments & Standardized Testing
There has been a lot of discussion about assessments and standardized testing over the past several years, especially more recently with the implementation of the Common Core Standards. Standardized tests are not designed to be the single measure of a student’s achievement and knowledge. There are two types of standardized tests: Aptitude Tests measure a student’s general knowledge in a specific subject. The SAT and ACT are two familiar examples of aptitude exams. Achievement tests measure specific knowledge and skills in a subject area such as math, social studies or science. Teachers also use a variety of other methods to determine how well students’ understand content and acquire skill. These include school wide assessments, classroom exams, essay questions, special projects, observations and portfolios. Always take the time to talk to your child about upcoming assessments. Have an honest discussion so that your child understands the importance of the exam but does not become overly stressed or anxious.
