North Little Rock District and Curriculum

The North Little Rock School District’s vision is world class schools for world class students. Over nine thousand students in grades PK-12 attend the District’s schools. There is one early childhood center, twelve elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools in North Little Rock School District, with all instruction based on the Arkansas Department of Education’s Common Core Standards. There is a comprehensive Parent/Student Handbook that provides information on Student Behavior, Attendance, Services and Activities, and Academics.

The North Little Rock School District has submitted a plan to the Arkansas Department of Education that describes a three-year timeline to further integrate technology into all instruction. Currently graphing calculators are used in math classes. Software is used in music and art classes to allow students to compose and create on computers. Internet resources are used to participate in Odyssey of the Mind competitions, develop robotic models, or to perform dissections. Students are knowledgeable about using Accelerated Reader, Odyssey, TRIAND, and Microsoft Word. Through labs or classroom workstations, students have access to twenty different programs, including Micro Type, Read 180, Examview, and Plato. Teachers are equipped with Smart Boards, Interwrite Boards, TI calculators, laptops, desktops, iPads, iPods, tablets, Classroom Response Systems, and image projectors. The North Little Rock School District uses GradeQuick and Edline for communicating with parents.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Little Rock District Curriculum

The District has developed a Coordinated School Health Initiative to increase attendance among both staff and students, reduce classroom
behavior problems, improve academic performance, monitor nutrition in school menus since the majority of students qualify for free and
reduced meals, increase physical education activities, and involve parents and the community in actively making life changes. The staff
has been provided with a list of Non-Food Classroom Rewards so that food is not distributed during instruction. The North Little Rock
School District also joined North Little Rock’s Fit2Live Initiative that encourages healthy eating and active living.

Keeping Informed: Recent North Little Rock Educational News

  • Gibbs Magnet School of International Studies and Foreign Languages - In the district, there are many Magnet Programs for students of all ages. The programs focus in on areas such as Arts, Math, Science and Technology, and Foreign Languages and International Studies. These programs allow students enhanced academics in chosen subjects in an environment supported by peers interested in pursuing similar interests.
  • Library Media Site - The Library Media Services available through the schools offers students the chance to develop skills in academic research and technology use. The library offers a number of technological stations for students to work at and access to databases requiring subcriptions. Learning how to navigate these resources prepares students well for college academics.
  • Specialist Wins National Award - LeAnn Alexander, an Education Vision Specialist for the North Little Rock School District, won the 2012 Extra Mile Award at the American Printing House for the Blind's Annual Meeting in December, 2012. She was honored because of her involvement with the Building on Patterns primary literacy program, which was developed to teach young blind children to read.
