North Middlesex District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum used in the schools of North Middlesex was developed to provide a strong academic foundation as well as opportunities to take on enrichment courses or innovative programs. The curriculum was designed with many goals in mind. Students are expected to gain a strong foundation in core academics and take elective courses that may inform decisions about future pursuits. The Ontario Curriculum details the development of knowledge and conceptual understanding that students will develop in their subjects and this model can be applied to additional courses and programs that schools offer.

We currently cover the following North Middlesex-area school districts: London District Catholic School Board, Thames Valley District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Middlesex District Curriculum

The Math and Science curricular frameworks detail the skills and knowledge that students will develop over the years in topics that prepare them for geometry, algebra, and data analysis in secondary school. In addition, both subjects provide the background required for the programs available for students in areas like computer programming and environmental science. They also have opportunities to work on projects and develop skills they will use in their future academic and careers pursuits.

The English curriculum focuses on reading and writing across subject areas and other means of developing critical thinking skills like participating in discussions or conducting independent research. Media and communications has developed into a set of courses available to secondary students and is a prime example of how the curriculum adapts to changes in society. Through these courses, students also develop strong analysis skills as they reflect on a range of text styles.

Chalk Talk: Transitioning from Middle to High School

Many things about middle and high school will be the same. Students will already be used to changing classes, carrying their books around, walking themselves to all of their classes, etc. The largest difference between middle and high school is students will be looked at as young adults, as they prepare for college, and will be expected to be more responsible. Students will not be chased after by their teachers to complete their homework and assignments and will simply lose the points for their unfinished work. Behaviors such as being unprepared for class or being tardy will be even less accepted than they were in middle school. Of course, the classes will be more difficult, and students may be required to take final exams and sometimes midterms, which cover more material than they are used to.
