Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Myrtle Beach District Curriculum

In Math, students have a greater focus than in the past. Students study fewer standards in any given school year, but with greater depth, whereas before, the same concepts had to be practiced year after year. The Common Core allows teachers to spend more time in a particular area of mathematical study, so that students master it with long-term retention. Throughout the course of study, they still cover the same information and content.

The English Language Arts strands consist of work with a variety of texts, including both non-fiction and literature. Student practice reading and synthesizing all types of writing, as well as, practicing composing their own work. The ability to read and write diverse text types helps students in all content areas, such as science and social studies, as well has provides them will marketable skills for the job market. Students also use these texts to respond in writing and develop critical, analytic writing skills needed for success in college.

Chalk Talk: Support Your Child Through His or Her Teacher

Building strong relationships between home and school is often overlooked as a way to help your child succeed in the classroom. However, parents who have positive relationships with their child’s teacher help their children have a positive attitude about school. A few ways to build this relationship might include: volunteering to help in the classroom occasionally, if you aren’t able to help at school, offer to work on something at home, such as cutting out or sorting materials. Ask the teacher if he or she has any supply needs for the upcoming month and offer to donate some of the necessary items. Keep lines of communication open; remember there are two sides to every story, be sure to get both before you jump to conclusions. Teachers work hard to help your child to be successful, if they know they have your support it just might make their job a little bit easier.
