Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Perth District Curriculum

The schools in North Perth use the Ontario Curriculum as the framework for learning across all subject areas. In Math, students are expected to become proficient in areas of numeracy, algebra and geometry, and data analysis and statistics. The Science curriculum explains the learning objectives for Biology, Earth and Space Science, Chemistry and Physics, and Technology. There is also a rigorous Environmental Education program that teaches students about ecosystems, interdependence of species, and environmental stewardship.

In English, the skills of critical reading, writing and communication are instilled through activities that engage students in compelling stories and engaging non-fiction. Formal and non-traditional learning opportunities are combined in many of the programs so that students have engaging ways to apply their knowledge. Students are able to take courses in Media Studies, Presentation and Speaking Skills, The Writer’s Craft, and Business and Technological Communication.

Chalk Talk: What Are Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)?

Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) are clearly expressed goals for student learning in each subject for each grade. They are often referred to as Objectives or Standards of Learning, but by and large, they serve the same purpose of providing clear guidance as to the skills, knowledge and concepts that students need to learn each year. This ensures that all students receive a high quality education preparing them equally for success in post-secondary academic and career pursuits. The curriculum is designed so that students are on a path of learning in each subject from the beginning of their elementary years to the end of high school.
