Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Plainfield District Curriculum

The Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards govern curriculum development in the North Plainfield School District. The Common Core State Standards outline what students should learn and know in math and language arts classes at each grade level. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide similar guidance in other subject areas.

The visual and performing arts curriculum provides students learning opportunities in which they discover the creative processes involved in the production of dance, music and theater performance, as well as the production of visual arts. Students also gain insight into the role of art in history by studying the impact that art has had on cultures throughout the world and how world events in turn impact art. Once students’ progress into higher grades, they acquire the skills they need to critique and analyze works of art by examining their fundamental elements and interpreting the artist’s intent and style. Aside from this, choosing a college major involves a healthy dose of introspection. What do you enjoy doing? What is your passion? And can that be translated into a college major? While it’s important to be passionate about what you decide to study, it’s also important to test the waters.
