Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Port District Curriculum

Through the elementary Language Arts curriculum, students gain skills in shared reading, listening comprehension, reading aloud, making predictions recognizing author’s purpose, drawing conclusions, and locating information. Middle school Language Arts covers skills like understanding text features, theme and conflict, descriptive language, the research process, and oral presentations. Upon graduation, students should have mastered many literacy and composition concepts and develop strong media literacy.

In Science, elementary students learn about earth, space, time, geology, matter, forces, motion, living things, ecosystems, and energy. In middle school, the Science curriculum covers topics such as Newton’s Laws, the heliocentric theory, desertification, pollution, climate, the water cycle, weathering, tectonic plates, space exploration, and the periodic table. And in high school, students delve deeper into these topics in biology, physical and environmental science.

Chalk Talk: Educational Video Games

Video games have become a huge part of our culture, and they can be educational as well as entertaining. For kids who are strongly interested in this field, here are some tips to help you choose the best video games. First look at the age rating; this will help you narrow your options. Opt for games that teach students about other places, people, and times. Find games that require a lot of movement to increase physical activity. Pick games that include more than one player so that your student can build social skills. With so many video games available, educational ones can teach students while they are having fun.
