Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Riverside District Curriculum

The Illinois Learning Standards guide learning from elementary through high school based on major strands in each subject. For instance, in Language Arts, students develop reading comprehension skills, writing abilities, and verbal communication skills each year so that as they move on they are able to do each at a more analytic level. In Math, students are introduced to numerical operations, pattern relations, shapes and measurement, and ratios so that they are prepared for advanced study in algebra, geometry, and statistics.

The school believes all students should be given opportunities to succeed, regardless of their learning needs. Students are given clear expectations for what they should learn by the end of each year in each class, and they are also given clear expectations for behavior. They are expected to develop independence in their learning. Students are expected to make healthy choices regarding themselves and their interaction with others. The school strives to educate students not only academically but holistically, so that they are healthy and wise.

Chalk Talk: Community College

Community, or junior, colleges are two-year, public colleges with open enrollment, which means that anyone who has a high school transcript or GED can enroll. Community colleges tend to only offer general education classes typically offered during the freshman and sophomore year at more 4-year colleges, though some have expanded to offer more advanced classes. There are a few public universities that work in tandem with community colleges to offer these advanced classes from the junior and senior year, and some even offer a few graduate classes, though this is rare. Community colleges are appealing because they tend to cost a tenth, or less, what even public universities cost. They also offer smaller class sizes and flexible schedules, and most have reciprocity set up so that transferring to a 4-year college to complete a degree is easy.
