Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Stormont District Curriculum

Overarching goals of the curriculum are the development of literacy and communication skills that use critical thought and analysis, the growth of problem-solving techniques, and the ability to recognize concepts and to test their validity. Core academic subjects such as English, Math and Science are designed around these broad goals, and the learning progression from elementary school through graduation provides the basis by which students are able to acquire these conceptual abilities.

The Ontario Curriculum goes beyond the Secondary Curriculum by offering post-secondary learning opportunities to district students. There is a program to assist working adults transition to a second career and which offers many career-skills courses. There is also an International Education program that connects students and teachers with their peers around the world to compare ideas and build bridges to future learning possibilities. Chalk Talk: How Assessments May Be Used as Learning Tools

Students have many assessments at school and, at times, it may feel like too much, not just for students but for school personnel as well. Assessments have many goals - to determine whether a student has mastered a subject or to determine their ranking in their grade. These are the high-stakes tests that can become the source of frustration. There are also authentic assessments which students work on such as projects and independent learning in which students produce a piece of scholarship start to finish, thereby showing what they know and can do. Such assessments are valuable learning tools as they teach a host of project planning skills along with the content the student is learning about. High-stakes assessments also have their value in that they can pinpoint areas of strength and weakness, which is data that can be used to improve instruction. In all forms, assessments are meant as instructional tools and can provide very useful information.
