The district also places emphasis on other types of learning beyond core academics, such as character education and health and wellness education, so that students develop personal habits that will serve them well throughout their education.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Vancouver District Curriculum
The Prescribed Learning Outcomes detail learning expectations in core courses and is designed to teach a series of fundamentals to young learners which they build on during middle and high school. The high school curriculum is rigorous and students are required to meet many objectives specific to areas like algebra and geometry in Math, or in reading and writing in English. The skills learnt in these courses are integrated into other areas of learning so that students are critical and literate communicators.
Advanced and specialized education programs such as Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) are also covered by the Prescribed Learning Outcomes. This curriculum can then be shaped at the district level by administrators in order to fit schools’ needs. In cases where a subject or course is offered which is not covered by the curriculum, general goals and guidelines are in place for administrators to follow.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Tutoring
Tutoring isn’t just for struggling students. It can also provide valuable skills for students to help themselves get ready for exams and by getting them into better study habits. Beyond traditional measures like the use of study materials such as flash cards and self-quizzes, tutors can aid in finding not only the correct answers, but timely ones so students may complete their tests more quickly. Tutors can help students recognize their strengths and use them to bring up areas of weakness. Often, the anticipation of a test can be the worst part, as a particularly important test can make even the best students nervous. Tutoring and mastering of study skills can often give promising students the confidence they need to ace every exam which they will take!
