Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Versailles District Curriculum

Elementary students are taught the basic Core courses which teach them in the areas of reading and writing in English topics, as well as the foundation of numbers in math. An example of an early learning expectation would be that second graders are introduced to the three basic parts of speech: the noun, verb, and pronoun. They must also use proper punctuation and capitalization, and be able to write complete sentences with correct subject-verb agreement.

Middle and high school students receive these same subjects, but at a more advanced level where they are able to dig deeper and learn off of the solid foundation they received in elementary school. Students are offered curriculum that will challenge them where they are at. Special needs students, including Gifted and ELL students, are provided for within the district. Students are encouraged to take courses in many disciplines, but have choices within their graduation requirements so that they can tailor their education to their interests and career goals.

Chalk Talk: How to Use Summer Break to the Greatest Advantage

With summer coming on, how can you, as a student, make the most of this summer before classes begin again? There are many options that can be constructive and helpful in view of your education. First, you may consider a summer job to save up for the oh-so-costly college tuition that you may be required to help pay in the not-so-distant future. You may also consider reading. Reading tougher classics that will be required in the coming year of studies may be worthwhile; you can get a head start while you have the extra time and mental energy to really understand the material. Along with this, you may want to stay brushed up on other subjects you studied during the school year that either that interested or tormented you. Take the time this summer to study in a laid back environment. The results can be helpful in so many ways this coming year.
