Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Northgate District Curriculum

Northgate’s high school mathematics curriculum includes a study of functions. Students work with trigonometric functions to model periodic phenomena. Functions are also used to prove and apply trigonometric identities. Learners acquire the ability to build functions as well, including building functions from other functions. Student-built functions allow for modeling a relationship between two quantities.

The elementary social studies curriculum in Northgate focuses on helping students acquire an understanding of history, geography, and civics. In history, children become familiar with the significant events in the development of the United States as well as Ohio. Students examine primary and secondary sources in order to get a better picture of how and why our nation came to be, and the forces that came together to create the state of Ohio. In geography, elementary students learn how to read and interpret maps and utilize maps to describe the location and physical characteristics of specific locations.

Chalk Talk: Homework Space

Children will be more successful with their homework if a little time and thought is put into creating a homework space for them. The first thing parents need to consider is the location of the space. It should be located in an area of the house with excellent lighting and which is separated from distractions. If a child has a television or telephone close at hand, they may be more likely to pay more attention to those than they do to their work. Next, allow the child to help decorate the area to make it personal. Let them have a say in organization items to help keep the area cleaned up. Another item to place in the space is a large calendar and/or a dry erase board. These can be used to keep track of assignments, due dates or other activities in the busy child’s life.
