Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Northridge District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum in Northridge is intended to help students develop a better understanding of the world in which they live and their place within it. In high school, students learn about world geography and its influence on ancient, historic, and modern civilizations. Learners explore the various ways that ancient peoples modified their immediate environment to meet their needs. This theme of modification for survival extends into historical periods in which humans built elaborate settlements that relied on dams, canals, bridges, and other structures to overcome geographic problems.

Northridge students also have the opportunity to learn a second language as part of the world languages curriculum. In elementary school, the focus is on helping students develop fundamental skills that will help them acquire effective language skills. Children work on recognizing common words and phrases, such as hello, goodbye, and days of the week. Learners also take part in activities that promote the understanding of contextual cues, gestures, and intonation that may be specific to a certain language.

Chalk Talk: Extra-curricular Activities and College Admission

One of the things that colleges want to know about possible admissions, is the activities that the teen participate away from class. This is one way for students to distinguish themselves from the other applicants. Some of the activities that admission offices are looking for include athletics, performing arts and those that include academics. In sports, the student does not necessarily have to play the sport, schools are always looking for student athletic trainers, scorekeepers and more. Through sports students show they know about teamwork, and it gives them a chance to gain confidence. The performing arts include dance, drama, music, and arts. This area slows students to show their creativity and can help improve academic standing, plus there have been some studies that show a correlation between the arts and higher SAT scores.
