Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Norwalk District Curriculum

Norwalk students have the opportunity to explore various career-technical fields as part of their studies. Students can take part in interest inventories to determine how their interests and skills fit into various career areas. Learners investigate careers, including the schooling required to enter that career field as well as salary information. The middle school curriculum involves introductory courses in various career areas, including agriculture, education, information technology, and marketing.

The physical education curriculum in Norwalk begins in elementary school where children develop basic locomotor and non-locomotor skills such as bending, stretching, hopping, and jumping. Children learn to combine various movements into sequences that require increasingly complex levels of balance and motor control. To improve fine motor skills, students work on throwing and catching a ball, kicking a ball, and dribbling a ball. Dance and gymnastics are also part of the physical education curriculum.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Environmental Education

Children who participate in environmental education courses derive many benefits. Obviously, an improved understanding of the environment and the human impact upon it is a primary benefit. But beyond that, environmental education offers many practical learning experiences. Students have a chance to engage in hands-on learning that promotes enthusiasm for learning. By taking part in learning outside the classroom, students are able to make connections between what they learn and how it actually applies in the real world. Environmental education also supports tolerance and understanding because students must investigate issues from multiple perspectives. These courses promote healthy lifestyles as well. Students conduct their studies outside in the context of actively engaging with the environment.
