Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Novi District Curriculum

Novi Community School District combines the Michigan Core Curriculum Requirements with a dynamic approach to teaching! Benchmarks or GCLE's in Math, English, Social Studies and Science gauge the students’ progress in the core requirements. A consistent format is used across the district to insure that each student is learning the same materials. The curriculum is based on research and aligned to statewide testing.

There are many goals of the curriculum beyond learning core knowledge. Students are expected to develop an understanding of concepts and procedures important to each subject. They are expected to become critical readers who are able to respond to different types of texts. In Math, students are expected to gain a range of skills that allow them to understand the best and most precise way to solve a problem. In Science, students are also expected to develop scientific literacy and the process oriented approach of scientific discovery.

Chalk Talk: Getting Past the Bumps

Most students have “that subject” that they have a bit of a struggle with. Sometimes that struggle may only last through a few lesson plans and then the light bulb comes on and they can get past the bump in the road, other times that bump in the road can completely derail the subject. Getting past the bumps in the education road sometimes requires a different perspective. Bringing in a tutor can give a student a much needed different perspective. Taking time to work on an area of learning can build the skills that will help in all future learning in that, and other, subjects. It also can give a student a great sense of accomplishment.
