Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oak Park District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum is centered around a workshop-based program where students participate in different aspects of a balanced literacy system. During Reading Workshop students will first participate in a whole group lesson that focuses on a certain skill or strategy and involves demonstration from the teacher. Students then move on to Independent Reading where the teacher has a chance to conference with students one-on-one. There is also a Writer’s Workshop component to the curriculum that is ran in a similar manner.

The Math curriculum uses the Everyday Math program which is a spiraling system in which students are exposed to different standards in varying degrees. Teachers use a multitude of strategies with this program including games, real-world scenarios, and journal equations. In high school, Honors and Advanced Placement courses offer students a more rigorous curriculum with college-level work and the chance to earn credit that will transfer to a university.

Chalk Talk: Summer Field Trips

School may be out for the summer, but the learning doesn’t have to stop. Take the time to go on some family field trips that will double as fun and educational. Science museums are a great option because they have something for everyone and usually have hands-on activities. To make it even more educational, look up your student’s grade level Science standards and make sure you visit those areas of the museum. If you don’t have a Science museum close by, you can always turn your backyard into one. You can spend the day learning about the plants and insects you find, or even plant your own garden. Another good option is to visit local historic sites as a Social Studies field trip. If you happen to have several historical sites near you, make a tour out of it as you try to visit each one. Educational summer trips will not only keep your student’s brain active, but will make for great family memories as well.
