Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oakland Park District Curriculum

The Science curriculum has standards such as how to think scientifically and gain knowledge of the earth, the solar system, the atmosphere, animals, humans, and plants. Students develop an understanding of scientific experiments, atoms, cells, motion, energy, and the laws that govern the physical world. Once in high school, students are able to select classes focused on life science, earth/space science, and physics.

The elementary Language Arts curriculum teaches students letter sounds, word-building, word meanings, and sentence structure. In middle school, students learn how to read fluently, understand the text, write well, and communicate verbally. By the time students graduate high school, they should be able to appreciate several genres of literature, gain information from different media, give oral presentations, write cohesive papers, and listen attentively.

Chalk Talk: How to Form a Strong Relationship with the PTA

The PTA is there to help parents make a difference in education. So, if you are heavily involved, the PTA can have a greater influence. First, visit the PTA website and Facebook page. Sign up for e-mail or text alerts. Attend the meetings prepared; come ready to take notes. Do not be afraid to offer ideas; more ideas prevent group-think. And when volunteers are needed, raise your hand. The PTA is an excellent way to have a maximum impact on your student’s education.
