Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oakville District Curriculum
Language is designed to develop literacy and communication skills which support all content area learning. Reading, Writing, Oral Communication, and Media Literacy are the foci through which students are provided texts to respond to in discussion and in writing. Students read a range of texts that offer different cultural perspectives and learn about their aesthetic values.
Science in the elementary grades is designed to teach students about Life Systems, Structures and Mechanisms, Matter and Energy, and Earth and Space Systems. Students compound subject knowledge with inquiry-based skills preparing them for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and Earth and Space Science in high school.
In Math, students are guided through problem-solving methods in different areas of mathematic operations introducing them to concepts in algebra, data and measurement, and geometry. In high school, students are required to take Algebra and Geometry and are offered multiple advanced mathematics courses as well.

Oakville District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Ontario Curriculum provides the framework for core academic subjects in Oakville’s schools, and curriculum for specialized programs are used in conjunction with the aims of the Ontario Curriculum. The subjects of Language, Math, and Science are detailed so that the broad overview of goals and the grade-level skills are clearly written out. The goal is for students to connect knowledge, think creatively, appreciate the cultural impact of texts, and to have a language with which to express these ideas. With a framework of mathematic, scientific and general literacy skills in place, students are prepared for their academic and career futures.

I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!

Chalk Talk: College Applications
Each element of a college application has a different purpose, and each is essential in its own way. The application, itself, is mostly demographic information, though it does also contain at least one essay, usually. The essay gives insight into the student’s personality and interests in a way that no other element of the application can. This is essential and very useful for both the application committee and the student. The transcript is the most important part. It contains a list of classes taken and the grades received. This tells the committee how challenging the course load has been for the student and how well the student has done in those classes. The teacher recommendations give further insight into how the student fares in classes.
