Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ocala District Curriculum

The Elementary Language Arts curriculum focuses on comprehension, grammar, word definitions, writing, story elements, and text structures. Upon completion of the 8th grade, students should be able to get meaning from what they read, get information from print and digital sources, listen attentively, speak well, use a wide vocabulary, and do research. When students graduate they should be able to analyze texts, write and speak for different purposes, glean information from speakers, and seek information through research.

Elementary students learn about measurement, data, fractions, graphs, tables, functions, and decimals in Math. In middle school, students develop their skills with ratios, linear equations, equivalents, percents, Pi, perimeter, and central tendency. Graduates of 12th grade should be able to create tables and graphs, use exponents and scientific notation, use the Pythagorean Theorem, convert units of measure, solve linear equations, and understand personal finances.

Chalk Talk: How to Teach Your Child About Money

Teaching your child about money will help him or her to be financially stable as an adult. First, start very early. Explain to the child that you have a budget and that you choose to spend your money on certain things. Let him or her find ways around the house to earn money and help the child to set financial goals. When he or she is old enough, help the student open a savings account. Next, explain different types of investing. Be sure to warn him or her about the dangers of too much debt and teach how to avoid it. Although money does not buy happiness, financial stability can help relieve stress.
