Ocean City District and Curriculum
The school district uses an objectives-based curriculum in all subjects, and incorporates the goals and design of Common Core State Standards into the Math and Language Arts programs. Each subject-area framework details grade level expectations for learning, and students are assessed accordingly through statewide testing. The goal is to ensure that students and teachers are successful in the instructional process. For all students, there are also additional supporting services including special education services, gifted and talented, and for English language learners.
We currently cover the following Ocean City-area school district: Worcester County Board of Education.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ocean City District Curriculum
The Language Arts curriculum is based on the Common Core Standards which break down the subject into the major strands of reading, writing, listening and speaking, media viewing, and conducting research. All these topics are taught together so that students are constantly connecting the skills they learn to the development of their broader, and more critical, literacy skills. Reading comprehension, analysis and interpretation are emphasized across fiction and non-fiction genres.
The Social Studies curriculum introduces students to civics, history, geography and as they get older, concepts of culture and society, economics, and governance. Throughout the years, students are asked to complete projects including putting events in chronological order, writing research papers, and reenacting people or events. Learning how to independently research information about societies, people and places is a goal, and helps students hone their interest in history and current events.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Character Education in Schools
Character education has become a part of the broader curriculum at many schools. And, while it doesn't mean trying to teach children to be a certain way, it does have the goal of developing certain habits of success in all children. Character education is also used to forward social issues, such as bullying, and helps the community recognize its values. Children are expected to show respect, understanding, and tolerance with each other, their teachers, and their environment, and this is accomplished through the character education initiatives. As your child is bringing home information on the types of social development and behavioral expectations at school, let your child know if they may be acting opposite that of the given character trait. As with any subject area, the learning can be extended in the home and benefit your child’s development in the long run.
