Chalk Talk: Developing Math Skills

Math is a subject that will be used throughout a child’s life, however, some students seem to have problems understanding math’s concepts. While shopping, cooking, or working on a craft, demonstrate how mathematics helps to get the job done. If a child has problems with multiplication, show how multiplication is repeated additions, so 3 x 4 is the same as 4+4+4. Another way to help the child is to allow them to play with their food, as they manipulate items to show sets of things and how this can be translated into math equations. With a little creative thinking, children can see that math is more than just facts to learn!
