Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Odessa District Curriculum
The Science Curriculum at Odessa Schools begins the students on their journey by showing them their world through the eyes of a scientist. Students in first grade are asked to look and draw the moon every night for two weeks. They learn how the moon has cycles, like so many other things in the world. Students take this knowledge and then discover the history of space travel and information on various celestial items. They also learn about the makeup of nature, from molecules and cells, to the parts of items.
Odessa schools take a balanced approach to their literary curriculum. This begins in the first years by introducing children to a variety of books which pertain to the topics they may be learning in other areas. Through their educational years, students are exposed to many different reading experiences. They read aloud, share reading with others, and experience guided reading as well as reading conferences and independent reading.

Chalk Talk: A Little Goes a Long Way
Students that have parents that take the extra step to ensure a full childhood strive harder and usually are more successful. Some things that parents can do to help their child include reading to the child, at least three times a week. Let the child pick out the book and use this time to enjoy your time together. Parents also need to communicate with the teachers. This can include going to open houses, or conferences. Parents can also become a part of the PTA or help with plays or talent shows or other school events. This involvement shows care and concern for the child's life. One other thing that parents can do for their children is to encourage them to build friends away from school. Perhaps host a playdate or let the friends join an activity together.
