Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ogden District Curriculum
The standards that guide Ogden schools’ English Language Arts curriculum require students to read and comprehend both fiction and non-fiction texts. Throughout the years, students also focus on language and vocabulary skills to aid in their development of strong literacy and comprehension skills. However, the curriculum goes beyond reading comprehension and teaches students important literacy skills such as written and verbal communication, research, and textual criticism.
The standards that guide Ogden schools’ math curriculum require students to have a fundamental knowledge of core mathematics concepts such as numeration, problem solving, and abstract reasoning. Students work with advanced algebraic expressions and equations and see how the subject is applied in real life. In geometry, they learn about different ways to solve spatial problems. Students following the curriculum learn to apply these core concepts to problems that occur in and out of the classroom.

Chalk Talk: Homework for Kindergarteners?
Today it is not uncommon for parents to find that their kindergarteners are being sent home with homework. Of course, this is quite different from most parents’ own kindergarten experiences, but that does not mean that it is bad. It is important for parents to put it into perspective. It is, after all, kindergarten homework. That is not to say that it is not important, but it not something to stress about. For most teachers, kindergarten homework is not about grades, it is about preparing children for future homework. Teachers give children small homework assignments early on so that those children will be prepared to tackle tougher homework tasks in later grades. So, if you are a parent who is feeling concerned about kindergarten homework, do not worry about it. Just think of kindergarten homework as training wheels on a bike.
