Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Okotoks District Curriculum

The curriculum used in Okotoks has been developed by Alberta Education to serve as a framework for teaching and learning in the subject areas. It describes the specific skills that students should develop within the subject areas and, in doing so, lays the foundation for the development of student proficiency in the subjects. Students exiting the Kindergarten program are ready to start reading instruction in first grade. Other basic skills, such as addition and subtraction, are learned in the early elementary grades, while multiplication and division are acquired in later elementary grades.

As students progress in Math, they learn how to develop their own equations In order to describe numbers and relationships. They work with functions, models, and expressions that allow them to communicate their mathematical understanding. Polynomials and rational expressions are also a key component of the advanced math curriculum. Students perform various operations on polynomials, use polynomial identities to solve problems, and learn how to appropriately rewrite rational expressions.

Chalk Talk: What Students Learn in Studio Art Courses

For young artists, a studio art class provides valuable learning experiences that can help them more fully appreciate the process and techniques used by artists. The primary goal of studio art classes is to give students experience with different medium, like photography or ceramics, but it also gives them the chance to see through a whole project from planning to exhibiting to reflecting on their work. Students engage in self-critiques of their work and may begin to build a portfolio. Students also reflect on the meaning and design of their work and have opportunities to discuss the social and cultural influences on their work. Learning how to speak about art and aesthetics also emerges within studio art classes, and prepares future artists for college art programs or working with other designers or gallery owners.
