Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Old Forge District Curriculum

Elementary students are meant to gain a foundation in all areas of learning they will participate in through the years. They also learn about the sciences and social studies and have time to learn social skills both in and out of the classroom. Students are exposed to the arts including visual arts and music. Students also learn about good health and the importance of consistent exercise. This comprehensive foundation is meant to ensure students are well-rounded and introduced to all types of areas that will later become academic, personal, or professional interests.

High school students receive the opportunity to take electives which can prepare them for college or career. Students have the opportunity to take advanced and honors courses in English, science and math. They are encouraged to consider the future in their high school studies. Graduates are required to pass standardized tests, complete a senior project, perform community service, and fulfill other graduation requirements.

Chalk Talk: How to Study in High School

Studying does not have to be difficult. To begin with, study early and often. This will help you to retain the information that you are being taught and you will be more ready for tests when they come, not having to cram information at the last minute. Know your learning style. If you learn best by taking notes, take lots of them. If you need to experience the material or touch or observe a process rather than just hearing it, then make a production of some sort or perform an example or experiment to help you learn the material. You can draw pictures to jog your memory on different concepts. You can use flashcards or rhyme schemes for memorization. You can use stories to remember processes. Whatever will work for you, use it. When difficult projects come up, make a plan on how you will accomplish it by the deadline with some time to spare. And remember to get enough sleep. Learned information is processed while you sleep and a good night’s sleep after studying will help you remember effectively what you have learned.
