Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Olive Branch District Curriculum

Olive Branch Public Schools believe in beginning math from the first year that children enter school. Children begin by learning how to recognize numbers and the words that correspond to them. They also begin to learn how to measure by comparing items as longer, shorter, taller, and shorter. In middle school, topics evolve into areas such as learning about perimeter through story problems and through actual hands-on activities such as measuring the perimeter of the classroom. In high school, the students continue growing as they study geometry, or they can stretch their wings and try advanced algebra, trigonometry or calculus.

The Language Arts curriculum also begins as the children enter school. In the first year of school, the children learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet, as well as the words that represent colors. They also begin to learn sight words and words with two or three letters in them. As they continue into the intermediate years, they delve more into word-building activities, and discussion and analysis of text. They also learn about different types of literature, such as poetry, drama and journalism.

Chalk Talk: How to Help a Child with Mathematics

Many children become frustrated because they do not understand mathematics. There are several ways that parents can help with their problem. Parents need to make sure that the child understands what the math homework is asking them to do. This may involve reviewing the previous pages in the textbook. Another way to help is to create, or purchase, a set of flash cards. In order to advance in mathematics, children need to be able to master their facts. Parents also need to be available when the children are working on their homework. By being close-at-hand, it instills the importance of math.
