Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orange Beach District Curriculum

For all students, a core of Math, Science, History, and English are taught to instill fundamental knowledge and abilities. Literacy skills involve using decoding strategies to understand words and texts, recognizing points of view, and communicating about ideas. Mathematics is focused on developing the ability for students to encounter a math problem and be able to determine what the best way to solve it would be.

In the teaching of guidance in the primary grades, the students are taught basic social skills. They are taught how to get along with their peers through role play and games, how to communicate with their peers and with adults, and general skills on social etiquette. Students usually have guidance class every few weeks for one period, depending on the staffing of the counselors within the school system. Guidance classes are vital to students, and it helps them from an early age to grow healthy socially and emotionally, which in turn yields academic success.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Elementary School Guidance Counselor

The Guidance Counselor plays many roles. In the elementary grades, the counselor has classes for all the grades, but in addition to that, they counsel individual students when needed, they organize programs (such as food bags and assistance programs), they help the teachers with lesson planning when needed, and some guidance counselors even are in charge of the standardized testing as testing coordinator. This occupation definitely is one that has many responsibilities!
