The West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District helps prepare students to be the leaders of tomorrow through their curriculum that incorporates their educators’ creativity, the community and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The TEKS lays out the skills, concepts and knowledge that students need to amass in order to be proficient in each subject and prepared for subsequent school years. Teachers are able to determine the best method to deliver each lesson considering the learning styles and requirements of each student in the classroom.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orange District Curriculum

Mathematics is an important part of the curriculum. Students begin to learn number sense from their first year. They learn how to assign individual numbers to a group of items. They then learn that by combining, or taking away items, the number in the set changes. As they continue on, they learn that they can use this knowledge to find unknown numbers in an equation, or to find the area of an object. These students are able to take a complex problem and break it down into individual steps.

Language Arts includes many areas, such as listening, reading and writing. Students at Orange Schools learn that these three areas work together as they first learn how to read by listening to stories in the classroom and at home. They also learn how to write by listening to directions and then following the assignments. After they master these skills, they then take reading, writing and listening into their other subjects as they then go from learning to read to reading to learn. They discover how reading, writing and listening can help them progress through school and with their lives.

Chalk Talk: The Perfectionist Child

A child who is a perfectionist may feel like they need to excel at everything. They, generally, place pressure on themselves to be successful and do not do well when this does not happen. Some of them may break down upon missing a single question. Parents of a perfectionist may need a few suggestions when raising this special child. This child may need assistance in seeing what an assignment is focusing on, also let them make mistakes. If they need help, just give a little guidance but let the work be their own. This will help them learn the importance of constructive feedback. Also, remind them often that everyone makes mistakes. Let them know that mistakes can help people learn so should be looked upon as opportunities. Finally, present the child with books or movies where the main character goes through a series of failures before they succeed.
