Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kingston District Curriculum
Math students in the Oregon City Schools learn how math is an integral component of everyday life. Using real-world experiences, elementary students learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Children also learn to work with fractions and percentages. At the middle school level, students learn about ratios and proportional relationships and use that knowledge to work out problems related to taxes, interest rates, and gratuities. Once in high school, learners take part in advanced studies that include algebraic formulas, geometric equations, and numbers and quantities.
Students also have an opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding of other languages and cultures through the district’s world languages curriculum. The impetus for the world languages curriculum is to prepare students for interaction with people from around the world. This is increasingly important as the economy becomes more global and as technology allows us to have contact with people from far and wide.

Chalk Talk: How to Become a Critical Reader
Being a critical reader involves utilizing several techniques to improve your understanding of the material. First, critical readers preview the text before fully reading it. Scanning titles, subtitles, and headings can provide a wealth of information about the passage. Next, critical readers give context to what they’re reading. We all interpret things through our own lens of understanding, but sometimes what we read is from a radically different point of view. Understanding the context within which the author wrote his or her piece is important to develop a better appreciation for the message and meaning of the text. Lastly, critical readers ask questions as they read, probing for further details about areas of confusion. By writing a question for every paragraph you read, you can remember and retain much more information.
