Orem District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

All schools in Utah follow the Utah Core Standards, which are based on the nationwide Common Core State Standards, an evidence-based common curriculum designed to prepare students for success in college and careers. The elementary schools in Orem offer a variety of enrichment activities as well as several dual immersion language programs in Chinese and Spanish. Orem High School also offers concurrent enrollment classes with Utah Valley University, where students can earn college credit as they take high school courses.

We currently cover the following Orem-area school district: Alpine School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orem District Curriculum

In Math, the Common Core aims to produce students who are capable of making sense of problems, reasoning abstractly, and being able to use mathematical patterns to apply mathematics in the classroom and beyond. The major strands of numeracy, algebra, geometry, and data analysis are the areas in which students are instructed and develop skills each year. This design is in place so that students’ knowledge and abilities are started during foundational years and deepened during each child’s education.

The goals of the English Language Arts Common Core is to make sure that students can read, understand, and critique a variety of texts, both informational and literary, and to write well. Students learn how to decode meaning, through writing and discussion, and use media sources as shared texts. Literacy and communication skills are also built, with the goal that students are able to conduct research, evaluate text sources, and write independently.

Chalk Talk: Improving Test Scores

Testing is an essential part of students’ lives and the structure of the contemporary educational system. Many students suffer from anxiety around testing, and aren’t able to show their full potential in a test-taking situation. Taking a test in any subject actually requires two kids of knowledge: first, the knowledge of the material being tested, and, second, the knowledge of how to take a test of this particular format. Students need to build both of these skills in order to be successful on tests, whether they are the SATs or ACTs, required state tests, or even just the everyday pop quiz. If your student is struggling with test-taking, a tutor may be able to help them identify the test-specific skills they need to reach their full potential.
