Chalk Talk: Keys to a Successful Alternative School Setting
Everyone is different and therefore everyone has a different learning style. Most school districts have developed programs to offers an educational opportunity for those students who are not succeeding in a traditional educational setting, those students with a different learning style. Most school districts have come up with an alternative school setting, but not all have been successful. All have started with the best of intentions, offering some supports for those students to help them achieve success. But studies have shown that those alternative programs with a particular formula have been the ones that have experienced more success. The program starts with a small student body, creating a specific program for each child, with clear instructions, a discipline code for every child to understand and follow, a supportive staff who gives positive reinforcement but has high expectations, and lastly, family and community support and involvement. All of these factors have been the formula to follow for a successful alternative school environment for many students.
