Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orrville District Curriculum

The high school English language arts curriculum in Orrville includes skills development in the area of reading literature. Students learn how to critically read literary works, citing specific information from the text to support their analysis of the story. Making inferences about that which is not specifically said in the text is another skill students develop. Learners develop an understanding of theme development, and work to identify how multiple themes or main ideas change over the course of the text.

Orrville’s elementary math curriculum includes a number of domains, including geometry, measurement and data, and fractions. The geometry strand focuses on helping students classify two-dimensional figures into property-based categories, such as square or circles. Graphing is also introduced, with learners developing an understanding of axes, the coordinate system, and planes. The measurement and data strand is related in that students learn how to calculate geometric measurements, such as volume.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Mentoring Programs

Mentoring programs have gained popularity in recent years as vehicles for change and stability in the lives of students. Research shows that mentoring programs have a significant, positive impact on student achievement and behavior. Students with a mentor are more likely to stay in school. In fact, mentored children are less than half as likely to skip school than their peers. Students that are mentored also perform better in class. Mentors can help students study, complete homework, and work on improving overall academic skills. This preparation is reflected in class grades that increase and standardized test scores that show improvement. Behavior also improves for students that have mentors. Both in and out of class, mentored students display improved communication skills, interpersonal skills, and aptitude for responsible behaviors. With fewer discipline referrals, mentored students are able to stay in class, continue learning, and build a strong foundation for future success.
