Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oshkosh District Curriculum

Graduation requirements are high for Oshkosh Area School District. Students are required to take four English courses, five math courses, and a semester of financial literacy. In addition, high school seniors can participate in a cooperative education program. Students who desire to go into technical fields gain classroom knowledge, then spend one or two class periods working at a paid job in their desired field.

Oshkosh Area School District recently implemented a new middle school math program focusing on college preparatory mathematics for students grades 6-12. Starting in middle school, students will work toward eight practical standards in math, demonstrating their understanding of key mathematical concepts that line up with the Common Core Standards for mathematical concepts and procedures. The goal of this program is for students to be prepared from 6th grade on for the rigors of college math.

Chalk Talk: Technology in Schools

Technology is one of the fastest growing sectors in our world today. To keep up with this development, students in schools need to be introduced to technology at an early age and learn essential operating skills that will enhance their educational experience. Jefferson Elementary School, part of the Oshkosh Area School District in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, has embraced this concept with open arms. Jefferson is the first OASD school to provide every student with an iPad. Students use these iPads to master technical skills and enrich their classroom learning. Technology is a fantastic tool to better connect students to the world around them. Students can develop virtual pen pals and learn about other cultures and parts of the world, or simply be more efficient in research tasks they do in class.
