Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oswego District Curriculum

The Mathematics instruction in the Oswego City School District for students in Kindergarten through High School is based on providing students with a strong foundation in mathematical skills including the use of algorithms and mathematical procedures which students can use in real life situations. The skills which students develop prepare them for Integrated Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and additional optional coursework including the Mathematics of Sports, Calculus, Computer Math and Web Page Design.

In English and Language Arts, students focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking in the development of a mastery of the English language. Students also learn to be proficient in critical analysis in a variety of reading material and in writing compositions and reports that are well documented and researched. Writing for purposes such persuasion, exposition, reflection and creativity are all encouraged in the Language Arts curriculum.

Keeping Informed: Recent Oswego Educational News

  • Warming the Community - The Oswego High School business class participated in a program to help the members of their community stay warm during the winter. The class created a drive to collect warm hats, mittens and scarves for the less fortunate in Oswego. The group was able to collect more than 500 of the outerwear items which were donated to the local Salvation Army.
  • The Secret Garden - Oswego High School recently performed the Broadway musical 'The Secret Garden' at the Robinson Faust Theatre for the Performing Arts. More than forty high school students are participating in the production and it was enjoyed by many in the community. The musical brings to life the popular story written by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
  • Scripps National Spelling Bee - Students from the Charles E. Riley Elementary School participated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition. Regional competitions are held across the country and internationally. State winners compete at the national level. The regional competition was held at the Robinson Faust Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Children can get to know Martha Washington or her stand in with a visit to the kids.usa.gov site where they will find a video with Martha Washington talking at the Mount Vernon Estate. In this video, Martha introduces students to her home and talks about what it was like being First Lady and what life was like in 1798. She discusses her family, and her grandchildren and what they like to eat, and what kinds of tips she has for a happy life which is to “keep yourself busy as a bee, cheerful as a cricket, and steady as a clock.”
