Overland District and Curriculum

The Ritenour School District curriculum includes clear expectations for what students should learn by the end of each year. Students are required to read, write, discuss, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas. Students have the freedom to craft their lesson plans to fit the needs of their students, who may have different learning styles. Students are also given opportunities to experience diverse extracurricular activities so that they can become involved in their school and community outside of the classroom.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Overland District Curriculum

The schools teach students to read novels, short stories, and various forms of literature, as well as nonfiction texts that provide context and background knowledge in science and social studies. Students are challenged by this reading. They are asked questions that push them to refer back to what the have read for comprehension as well as a deeper understanding of the writers’ intentions, techniques. Students also discuss the soundness of a writer’s argument, and where their point of view comes from, and use evidence to do so.

This reading and analysis stresses critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills so that students will have success in their futures by giving them a chance to actively discuss ideas and opinions in a moderated setting. Actively engaged, active students are more likely to achieve success in their studies, their careers, and their lives.

Chalk Talk: Fast Aps

College applications can be tedious, and waiting months for a response can be incredibly stressful, so one option that students have is to apply to colleges that accept Fast Applications. Many colleges have created short applications with quick turnarounds. These “Fast Aps” promise ease and responses sometimes within a couple weeks. For a student with a strong profile, Fast Aps can be a great, quick way to complete an application. But for a borderline student, a Fast Ap might not be the best choice. This is because Fast Aps are stripped-down applications that usually don’t include recommendations, and sometimes even essays. Essays and recommendations might just push a student from a maybe to a yes, so not including them can be a mistake. Of course, adding these additional documents can slow down the application as well, so patience is required.
