Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Owasso District Curriculum

The curriculum follows the Oklahoma Academic Standards which serve as expectations for what students should know and be able to do by the end of each school year so that students in every classroom receive current and relevant learning experiences. The curriculum focuses on developing and encouraging deep thinking, conception understanding, and real-world problem solving skills in all students. It incorporates strong literacy skills in science, social studies, and technical subjects with real world applications when possible.

The curriculum standards in Language Arts also emphasize the use of citations and examples from texts when creating opinions and arguments. These standards are intended to increase and maintain rigor and grade-level expectations while the district also provides a full range of support for English language learners and students with special needs if they need assistance in reaching the literacy goals.

Chalk Talk: Early Decision College Applications

Many students opt to apply to colleges early because of the benefits involved. Early applicants have a higher rate of acceptance because they are competing against fewer other applicants. Also, preferential treatment is shown to them because they have demonstrated a commitment to attending the college by applying early. Since financial aid offers limited resources, applying early decision can mean that the applicant can get those funds before they are committed to other students. Early applicants usually receive responses sooner, which can mean that the student has finished the application process while other students are barely started. During the senior year, this can relieve a huge amount of stress for a student. Of course, having to complete an application early can be stressful for students, and other factors, such as binding applications, might mean that an early application isn’t the right choice. But for many students, the benefits outweigh cons.
